The deciduous woody twining vines are 3 to 15 meters long, all hairless. The young branches are gray-green with vertical stripes. Palmate compound leaves, clustered at the top of short branches; petioles are slender. Purple flowers bloom in summer, with short racemes axillary. The fleshy, berry-like, oblong, slightly kidney-shaped, round at both ends, about 8 cm in length, 2 to 3 cm in diameter, purple when ripe, soft, cracking along the abdominal sutures.
